The Empress’s doctor

One of the joys of writing Imperial Exile has been meeting some of those who were actual eyewitnesses of the Emperor’s exile in Bath in the 1930s. This morning I went to see Bridget Wakefield, one of the daughters of Dr Matthews who used to be Empress Menen’s doctor during her stay at Fairfield House. At her wonderful cottage in Charlcombe overlooking Bath, Bridget showed me some of her father’s letters in which he talked about his contacts with the Empress and her family. Bridget herself can remember playing at Fairfield with some of the Emperor’s children and grandchildren. All fascinating stuff!
